Acclaimed Folk Musician Eric Selby Premieres His 3rd Album, ‘Dang Fool’
Singer/songwriter Eric Selby is taking a step in front of the drumset and mixing board releasing his own original music. Since the age of 18, Eric has played in progressive/alternative bands and had the opportunity to play with many iconic musicians and was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. “When I released my original music, I never would have guessed the positive response my music has received,” gushes Eric.
In 2022 alone, Eric was named a Finalist by the Wammie Awards for “Best Folk Artist," "Best Folk Album," "Best Folk Song" and "Best Pop Song." Roots Music Report listed both of Eric’s releases, Do, Baby. and Where You Born At? as their National Top Contemporary Folk Album Chart’s "Best of 2021."
His new album, Dang Fool, out today, is an 8 song alternative rock and contemporary folk collection surrounding themes of love, loss, and time. “Horseshoes & Hand Grenades'' is about taking control of your own life and destiny because you can’t always rely on others to do that for you. “I Carry You” looks at when relationships end, whether it is romantic, family or friendships, but you still carry that person with you in your head, heart, or soul as you move forward. “A Knew Year'' is a song of hope, magic, and excitement for the future, with your past experiences to guide you moving forward.
The album has a musical cadence of Crosby Stills Nash and Young meets Pink Floyd in the folksy and slightly experimental nature of it. His voice, however, harkens to that of Dawes. Upon listening you’ll find that you’re compelled to keep listening. His writing is so unique, hitting you with a rawness and honesty that only the folk tradition can accurately communicate.
Dang Fool is a retrospective look at an emotional journey suggesting that it’s time to stop looking in the rearview mirror and start looking forward. “A good representation of this is that although I’ve never recorded a cover on any of my records, I felt that recording my own interpretation of The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows” as the last song on this record was an apropos way to finish out this release since the title, alone, suggests hope, mystery and potential,” shares Eric.
“I see this album, Dang Fool, as the final chapter of a three-chapter journey,” he says. “The first chapter being my first record, Do, Baby., and the second being my next release, Where You Born At?. It really wasn’t planned or intended to be that way but it has evolved to be the coda on this part of my creative and emotional journey that, for some reason, I needed to communicate.”
