Opening track “Walking on Water” sets the energy high, launching in with punchy piano chords, rhythmic percussion and bursting into a flourishing chorus with Laura’s rich vocals giving lots of depth. The addition of the saxophone brings excitement and intensity, and paired with the guitar, adds to the bluesy sound.

The title track, “Beauty In The Broken”, leads with a more pensive tempo and was born out of a meaningful conversation with fellow musician Dave.

His question was “What would it be like if you were on the outside looking in?” , sparking a powerful reflection within Laura. She describes the experience of imagining an empty room and hearing someone call her name, a vision that initially stirred feelings of isolation but which eventually revealed the image of a shattered jewel, with light filtering through the cracks.

Laura says:

“This song is about the healing I experience when I let someone in—when I allow myself to be truly seen and feel their kindness and compassion. It’s a reminder that even in our most vulnerable moments, there is beauty—and light—waiting to be found.”

Laura’s signature combination of emotive vocals and intricate guitar work come to the fore here. While the song addresses the struggles of mental health, addiction, and isolation, there is a tender and quiet optimism that reminds listeners that, even in the darkest of times, there is still light and much hope. The chorus is warm, inviting and filled with gorgeous harmonies as Laura’s vocals soar.

“Misfits and Renegades” continues with a bright outlook, blending folk, blues elements, vocal harmonies and vibrant piano flourishes.

In “Enchanté,” Laura takes a closer look at intimacy, shifting from the communal themes explored earlier in the album. The mix of folk and jazz in this track brings to mind the romantic vibe of Nick Drake's early music, giving her sound a rich, emotive feel.

The re-imagined “Dream a Little Dream” is a beautiful rendition of the 1931 classic, with rich vocal harmonies , intricate guitar work, and the bridge progression, but maintaining a simplicity and brightness.

Indeed, each song on this album reflects an unwavering belief in a brighter future. Whether contemplative or joyful, Laura’s compassionate perspective stands out - a rare gem in the folk and jazz world. And unlike many of her peers, Laura resists the lure of cynicism and instead chooses to focus on the inherent good in people.

Produced by Marco Delmar, “Beauty in the Broken” has a broad sonic palette that really works to amplify the album’s storytelling. Each song offers the listener a unique atmosphere, from introspective melancholy to helpful release.

It is this genuine, human-centered vision that makes her music feel both uplifting and enduring, offering a path towards a kinder and more sustainable way of living.
