Parenting Panel with Heidi Vincent

Singer-songwriter Heidi Vincent has returned following a transformative hiatus dedicated to raising her “Truly” amazing daughter, as well as navigating the realms of healthy love and embarking on a phoenix-like journey of self evolution after a later-in-life ADHD diagnosis.

Today, Heidi has a newfound clarity about her identity and purpose. She shares her insights into this remarkable journey and her return to the music scene, beginning with the vulnerable and uplifting single, "Dear ADHD."

Based in the vibrant city of Vancouver, BC, Heidi is not just an artist but a storyteller with a deep passion for understanding emotions, identity, and the moments that shape us. Her sound is a harmonious blend of earthy and elegant elements, a description she playfully encapsulates as being "bare feet in the dirt, but can still hang with the judges."

Having previously released two full-length albums, Heidi's musical journey has taken her to stages across Canada and North America. She has been featured and interviewed on television, as well as terrestrial and satellite radio, with her songs making appearances in numerous films and television programs.

We caught up with Heidi for an exclusive interview to find out more about the inspiration behind her music, being a parent, and how parenthood has helped her creativity:

How many children do you have? And what are their names and ages?

I have one Truly beautiful and wonderfully created daughter. I also have a fantastic stepson as well. Their names are Truly, she is nearly 15, and Adam who is now 19.

Did you have fears or concerns about how becoming a parent would interfere with your artistic endeavors?

There was no fear; I was content to put my music aside to a large degree. I knew that one day I would pick it up again when the time was right. I focused on raising, protecting and being Truly’s mother and making wonderful memories.

In what ways has parenthood helped your creativity, if any?

Parenting is a force, it is like gravity. Being a parent pulls joy into your life, laughter falls into your heart. The astronomical mass of love moves so naturally between parent & child. This movement fills my well of creativity, but I have to wait until I am quiet, until my mind is quiet to “tune in” to my songs.

What has parenthood taught you about yourself, your music, or your creative process?

Wholehearted, unequivocal patience, boundaries and creating a schedule with blocks of time has taught me about minding my creative process. Being a parent keeps me humble, it’s the best mirror to my faults and therefore a map to become a finer human being so I can give more.

How do you juggle your family and your career?

I have a calendar that I’ve blocked out time for my whole life, it’s at times hard to follow because things come up but I do my best.

Who is your support system?

I’m grateful and blessed to have a magnificent family to supports me on so many levels. My friends do as well of course.

Do your children inspire your music?

100%!

What’s one thing you wish someone had told you before you became a parent?

I would have really appreciated information on parenting an ADHD child/teen when you are ADHD. LOL

Any advice for others?

Be CURIOUS about your children. They are not you, they don’t need to follow suit to your character, let them develop into their own little cool humans. I am in the process of this, thank God I figured it out now and not later. I can see my daughter now as the beautiful human that she is and becoming.
