Atoosa Grey’s haunting melodies encompass you in her newest track “Storms.” The Brooklyn singer-songwriter is well renowned across the country for her intriguing music and vocals. “Storms” takes you on a journey through Atoosa’s difficult love. Surrounded by piano and strings, the beauty of this track will lure you right in.

Driving pianos blend with intense yet haunting vocals, as the song is reminiscent of something you’d hear from a Tim Burton film. It’s intriguing, beautiful, yet tense and ghostly. Vibrant strings are perfectly correlated with her vocal melodies, and the piano continuously drones on. The addition of woodwinds just overarches the eerie mood, but in the end all of this clears. The piano becomes daintier, with lighter accompaniment. You almost feel a sense of relief as this piece comes to an end, and Atoosa’s vocals slowly fade with the instruments. Despite the lack of percussion, the drive and dynamic contrast in this song is huge and impactful.

Outside of her music career, Atoosa is a published poet whose works have appeared in print and online journals, including Right Hand Pointing, The Best American Poetry Blog, and Dogwood Journal, among other outlets. Her first chapbook, Black Hollyhock, was released Fall 2015 on Finishing Line Press.

The album was co-produced by Atoosa and her husband, music industry veteran Noel Grey. Joining Atoosa and Noel in the studio is gifted engineer Sascha von Oertzen. The musicians featured on the album include longtime guitarist James Mastro (Ian Hunter Band, Mott The Hoople), bassist Todd Sickafoose (Anais Mitchell, Ani DiFranco), percussionist Mathias Kunzli (Regina Spektor), cellist Dave Eggar (Esperanza Spalding, Frank Ocean), and Oboist/English Horn player Katie Scheele (Frank Ocean, Anthony Braxton). Dear Darkness was mastered by Grammy-winning engineer Emily Lazar.

A beautiful track is exactly what is expected from Atoosa Grey. The third of three singles in about a year, I can not wait to hear what Atoosa has coming out next.
