Indie Pop Band Kick and the Hug Have Finally Unveiled Their Debut Album
For a band who formed in the midst of a global pandemic, Kick and the Hug have certainly kicked the ball out of the park.
Their debut, full length release is out now. Recorded at Kingsize Soundlabs in Los Angeles during 2020, this was a challenging time to put together music. Not only because of the global situation, but also because the band had not been in the studio all together since 1993. The band states:
“Kick and the Hug” is #dadrock to the core. So many influences it would blow up a phone. This is one of those albums that had to be made. All circumstances were working against us. I mean ALL of them.”
Their first single, “Girl You Changed” was released in the summer of 2021, and features on the album .
This song stands out with its vibrant, punchy staccato strings, guitar and a catchy chorus reminiscent of modern 90´s rock. It is a big Festival sound, ambitious for a band who have never actually played a live gig. Not yet, anyway.
Their opening track, “In a Minute”, is more of a powerful pop rock song, again with punchy rhythms. Their acoustic ballad, “Daughter” is more mellow and emotive while “Boy” is light, upbeat and breezy with another catchy chorus that stays with the listener. All in all, you can see why Kick and the Hug have been described as “Indie Rock … for parents.”
Kick and the Hug are an all American indie-rock band hailing from Boulder, Colorado.
Lead singer / guitarist Doug Murray and drummer / keyboards Sam Young used to play in 1990’s Boulder outfit, The Winebottles. Murray and Young are joined together with base player Mike Ferguson (also strings and vocals), and lead guitarist Tyler Skye.
On this debut self release, Ladies and Gentlemen, Kick and the Hug, Tyler Skye has really worked his magic on a great production.
