The Parenting Playlist: Songs That Are Sure to Embarrass Your Kids

As a parent of children between the age of 8 to 18 (and probably beyond), you will embarrass them at some point, whether you want to or not. You can even embarrass your kids by just existing. You can’t do anything to stop this phase of life, but you can embrace it. Obviously, I don’t intentionally embarrass my kids (at least not on a daily basis), but this weeks list has songs that my kids are embarrassed by either because of the song itself or my own (or a parent’s) reaction to a song. Beware: some of the songs on the list may offend some.

  1. Toto - “Africa”

I love this song and turn up the volume every time I hear it, but my kids hate it. They hate the song and they hate when I refuse to turn it off. One even asked “this is music?”

2. Blackstreet - “No Diggity”

I think my kids are embarrassed by me when I bob my head and sing along when this song comes on. They hate the song because of my reaction to it, at least that’s what I’m telling myself because if they don’t like the song, it means I didn’t raise my kids right.

3. Backstreet Boys - “I Want it That Way”

I think this is the cheesy boy band vibe and era that my kids don’t like. While I understand it, I’m not ready to accept it.

4. Kelis - “Milkshake”

This is another one where my kid’s are more embarrassed that I sing and dance along and not necessarily the song. I don’t think they want their parent singing about ones “milkshake.”

5. Fountains of Wayne - “Stacy’s Mom”

Again, I understand why my kids are embarrassed by this one. It’s about being in love and wanting to be with your girlfriend’s mom. It just carries so many memories for me. My kids are embarrassed by the audacity Fountains of Wayne had to even release the song.

6. Jason Derulo - “Talk Dirty To Me”

I don’t know if I’d want my parents to sing this out loud either, but it’s so catchy!

7. The Weather Girls - “It’s Raining Men”

I love this song. My kids will one day too….

8. Flo Rida - “Low”

My kids like this song, they don’t like that I know it.

9. Fergie - “Fergalicious”

This one is strange because I asked daughter why she didn’t like this song and she said “they spell ‘tasty’ wrong.”

10. Dead or Alive - “You Spin Me Right Round (Like a Record)”

When I told my kids that Flo Rida’s “Right Round” was a cover of Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Right Right,” they were horrified to find that the original version sounded totally different. They were happy that Flo Rida made it better.
