Christian Parker Relishes in Memories In His Latest Single “Cast A Line”

Singer/songwriter from Canton, New York, Christian Parker, brings about an uplifting to his listeners in his latest single “Cast A Line.” Known for melancholic lyrics, Parker sings about things many people don’t like to sing about. He talks about sadness and depression, demonstrating the melancholic nature of his music by targeting these major issues that cannot be singled out in a song. In this single, Parker is encouraging his listeners to be ready to catch someone who’s falling and to understand why they fall.

This folk-like single is here to describe feelings someone might be experiencing when a difficult situation arises. In the single, it can be implied Parker is singing about ebb and flow of life around us, that we all lose someone eventually. He makes great imagery with his lyrics and compares opposites such as waxing and waning moons and down and up. He dedicates his first verse to discussing the hurtful feeling that comes when things start to change and decline. He says that “nothing seems the same” and this is where the downfall begins. After the first verse comes more comparisons and he decides that through loss, he will “keep movin’ on.” Parker then compares things that typically always come as a pair, such as moon waxing and waning, in his last verse. This is followed by “some things never change”. Whereas in the beginning of the song Parker describes things that are changing, but ends the song reminding us that in the end, we all have the same fate.

Parker carries a lot of emotion behind this single. He has a deep sadness about his voice that conveys the rawness and intensity of those feelings themselves. His catchy chorus is his main message about the issue at hand. He compares our abilities to keep ourselves in a bubble with casting a line to catch fish. However, what we are trying to catch are actually stars falling from the sky, the stars being the ones we’ve lost and trying to catch and hold on to the memories. At the end of his song, Parker tells us “there’s no need to cry/’cause it’s falling,” telling us it’s ok to cry.

The acoustic guitar carries the main melody for “Cast A Line”, which is what makes this song feel a little more like a folk song, paired along with the profoundly strong emotions. The addition of electric guitars brings about a more country and rock feel to the song. When it comes to vocal variation and style, Parker’s voice resembles that of Fleetwood Mac. They also both get very passionate with their music. Parker does get more of that indie pop aspect from Mac DeMarco, who makes incredibly dreamy music, similar to that of Parker’s lyric imagery. Parker breaks barriers both in genres and emotion portrayal in the storylines and “Cast A Line” is an important song to listen to as encouragement to end all those negative relationships surrounding you.
